Birken is the Danish word for birch. A birch tree can be enormous. Yet, it never seems intimidating or dominating. The tree’s bark plays with light and darkness in a way that almost camouflages its size. The small and dainty leaves form an open crown, swaying in the wind and graciously embracing the sunlight. You’ll never get tired of watching a birch tree.

Birken is a rather large apartment complex. Still, Årstiderne Architects have allowed many of the tree’s characteristic features to be reflected in the building. This means that Birken expresses many different things – exemplified by the building’s transition from 6 to 4 floors. The facades are disrupted by 1-3 m. displacements, and two different types of red bricks are used to create a variation between light and dark surfaces. On the gables, selected bricks stick out 2 cm. to give rise to a pattern of light and shadows. All of the above ensures that Birken always seems hospitable and welcoming rather than clumsy and heavy.

Birken is divided into two buildings, each of which has its own recreational garden space. The Northern building is designed as a U-shape, while the Southern building has open corners to improve cohesiveness and access to the inner garden spaces.
The garden spaces are populated with a rich selection of trees, fruit trees, and bushes. They’ll be intersected by natural walking paths, swerving around areas for community, nature, and play. There are playgrounds, kitchen gardens, and orangeries, allowing the community between everyone, whether big or small, to unfold.
Under the Northern garden space, Birken’s massive car park is hidden. Here you’ll find free parking, electric car chargers, and an area for bicycle parking. You have direct access from the car park to the green garden space.

THE AREA
Nærheden – a new suburb
Birken is a part of a brand-new neighbourhood being developed in the coming years near Hedehusene. The new suburb is called Nærheden and will be developed with the purpose of improving the local quality of life based on values like sustainability, community, and easy and safe living.
Everything you’ll need is literally nearby. Employers, institutions, a brand-new school, sports facilities, cultural sights, shopping, a train station, safe traffic conditions, and free parking facilities for the local residents. All of it is right here.
Nærheden is also a neighbourhood with close connections to nature. The entire area is encircled by a green belt with blue lakes called the Loop. Perfect place for a walk or a run.
