I could also get it to fail by going too fast in the Batmobile. When I used the afterburner on the approach and ejected at the last moment, then Batman moved so fast after the eject that he reached the wall before the upward boost could kick in.
I hit about where you indicated. Maybe you're trying so hard that you're overdoing it? The Batmobile doesn't need to be going very fast when you eject.
You also don't need to be all the way at the finish line when you eject in order for things to work out, but that shouldn't be hurting anything as long as you're not hitting the barrier.
Regarding the left stick, you do need to hold it in whichever direction makes Batman angle up depends on your flight inversion settings; sounds like maybe that's "forward" in your case.
